Review of Outlaw King (2018) by Simon P — 11 Nov 2018
Great battle scenes with some fantastic camera work and direction. But the film has no heart despite all the blood spilled. Where's the pathos? We're supposed to root for King Robert, but why exactly? Clearly his struggle as a human being begins with the prior events of William Wallace's rebellion, so why doesn't the story begin there too? It's hard to fight the feeling that we join the story too late, and as a result we're always struggling to catch-up with the hero's motivation, frustratingly elusive and out of reach.
Personally, I believe this is the main flaw and reason why the film feels like a heartless trudge; the audience are denied the emotional investment they need to trudge along with King Robert and have faith in his journey.
