Review of Outlander (2008) by Barbara C — 07 Feb 2010
Not bad, but it does border good, if very predictable. The dvd cover has a critic's proclamation that its "Beowulf meets Predator", but it drifts into Pathfinder (Karl Urban) meets Soldier (Kurt Russell) at times.
Hurt is at the top of his game, Huston is likable, Caviezel is his angsty and confused character, Myles starts off likable and then either the actress or the character just cease being remotely interesting.
The editing is a little choppy, but after seeing many of the deleted scenes (several of which would have made for a more interesting, possibly better story) I'm thinking that probably falls to a lack of material provided by the director or writer.
Lastly, the CG of the "dragons" is spectacular, probably because it is used sparingly. In the main character's, mostly unnecessary, flashbacks the CG comes across looking cheesy and the extent to which it was used makes me wish they'd cut it.
