Review of Outlander (2008) by Martyn T — 22 Aug 2010
I was really supprised by this. I actually really, really enjoyed it.
It's a half decent sci-fi flick crossed with a half decent viking mythology film making one whole good Viking Sci-fi film.
The actings good, sets are great, fighting good, story is engaging.
The Dragon/Space Monster is quite well done, they spent the CGI money wisely, meaning you don't see the whole thing all the time, flames, teeth and limbs are glimpsed occasionally in the night adding to the tension and mystery of the thing. Too many times in low budget (and major) films they think you need to see the whole creature and the hero fighting it and the results look dodgy. Here there is the perfect lightness of touch of a well thought out and made film.
Plot wise, you might get a few groans from people, but it works. And, why the hell not have a guy from space land in a viking village and fight a dragon.
This film deserves a big thumbs up and a pat on the back.
