Review of Outland (1981) by Christopher S — 21 Feb 2009
Bland sci-fi adventure from writer-director Peter Hyams is an attempt at a sci-fi western - often described as 'High Noon' in space - but is really just a dull detective story in its first half and a dopey action film in the second.
Most of the cast, including Sean Connery and Peter Boyle, sleepwalk through their roles - and Frances Sternhagen starts off as a much needed spark, but then just gets annoying. There are some decent special effects and a solid, driving score by Jerry Goldsmith, but Stephen Goldblatt's cinematography is overly dark and murky and the production design is very derivative of 'Alien'.
Instantly forgettable.
