Review of Outland (1981) by Asa B — 20 Jan 2013
A surprising stately-paced sci-fi from the early 80's starring Connery as a Marshall who's 'gotta do what a guy's gotta do'. The early deaths suggest this film will be more of a mystery but soon the culprit is revealed and instead the film becomes 'High Noon' in outer space.
The corruption at the heart of the film and the grubbiness of the mining colony means that this film could have been set at any time period and didn't need to be a sci, but Hyams keeps the film firmly fixed in reality (I like the use of shotguns rather than ray-guns) and Connery is great in the lead.
In fact his presence dilutes the tension towards the end as it's clear who will triumph in the end. Also look out for a young Berkoff giving another manic performance. Decent sci-fi.
