Review of Outbreak (1995) by Samantha A — 22 Oct 2012
It's easier to enjoy, or rather tolerate, the virus thriller "Outbreak" once you accept two-time Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman as a legit action hero, who can be as tough as they come. It is one of the great scare stories of our time, the notion that deep in the uncharted rain forests, deadly diseases are lurking, and if they ever escape their jungle homes and enter the human bloodstream, there will be a new plague the likes of which we have never seen. This is a picture good enough to make you want to go to the movies and frightening enough to make you wonder if you should avoid the crowds. Displays all the initial symptoms of a promising thriller, it soon degenerates into a low-fever whodunit. But in the end this is Hoffman's movie, and it's refreshing, finally, to see him not as an oddball or eccentric but as a decent, capable guy who is ultimately a lot more intense than most people. One of the great scare stories of our time.
VERDICT: "High-Quality Stuff" - [Positive Reaction] This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent. (Films that are rated 3.5 or 4 stars).
