Review of Out of the Past (1947) by Kiera M — 25 Sep 2010
Oh, that Robert Mitchum. He plays his ultra-heroic character so cool.
This is really a wonderfully tragic love story. A man, Jeff Markham, gets tangled with the wrong people in events that come back to haunt him later, but never once does he succumb to the corrupt nature of his past demons.
After being framed and beguiled numerous times, Jeff ultimately dies on behalf of proving himself innocent. He wanted at last to rid himself of the double-crossing temptress played convincingly by Jane Greer, so that he may live in peace with his new love, Ann (Virginia Huston). His death is powerfully composed as he climatically falls from the driver?s seat of a car to the sound of a crescendo.
He?s finally proved himself decent, but it?s too late. Ann attends his funeral and the deaf gas station employee tells Jeff?s mournful love that he really was running away with that vile Kathie from his past, sparing her the pain of losing a truly honorable man.
A classic that?s definitely worth your time. It?s a sharp witty film noir with an impressive story.
