Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Jc E — 10 Apr 2014
Honestly, I was really looking forward to this latest entry from Scott Cooper (Get Low), as the two films I've seen of his have both featured strong characters and a subtle approach to storytelling.
Add the fact that Christian Bale (American Hustle), Casey Affleck (ParaNorman), Sam Shepard (August: Orange County), Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Forrest Whitaker (Lee Daniel's The Butler) Willem Dafoe (John Carter), and the beautiful Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) all signed on for this gig, and you've definitely got my interest.
Like Cooper's other films, this one plays out very slow and methodical, but much darker. All the actors give fine performances, but I was a little disappointed by the climax. Not to give away anything, but it seemed to drag on for an eternity, all while I'm yelling at my television "Just [do something that I wanted to happen in short order]!" Still, it's a broody film that fits pretty well in Cooper's canon, and features some great acting.
