Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Tim H — 27 Nov 2007
God, this movie felt like an R-Rated Ocean's Eleven.
This movie screams cool, which is weird because usually Steven Soderbergh tries so hard to be cool that he becomes uncool. Not so with Out of Sight. First of all, I had to like this movie for all the Detroit Metropolitan area pride. Downtown, Ren Cen, the State, and...Bloomfield Hills? Seriously! They know the area damned well. Who the hell on this movie had the Detroit cred? Golly.
Anyway, this movie surprised me. Honestly, everyone knows the trunk scene. I truly thought that the entire movie took place in the trunk of a car. Boy was I ever wrong. The sequencing of this movie was great. Usually, mixing in flashbacks with a linear plot can be confusing, but Soderbergh actually pulled it off. The story was a bit on the light side when it came to the actually (predictable) diamond theft, but I imagine adding an over-the-top complicated plot would have just been unnecessary in this clearly character-driven piece.
But I have to say, favorite moment: Samuel L. Jackson cameo? Where the hell did that come from? Man, he is just the guy who jumps out of the cake for you. Thanks Sammy!
