Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Andrew C — 05 Jun 2009

I love just about everything about this movie. It's a romantic character study disguised as a crime drama... the plot to rob a rich guy (Albert Brooks) of his uncut diamonds is certainly a huge part of the story, but it's not the complete story, or even the REAL story, which is the budding romance between a cop and a criminal.

.. the chemistry between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez is off-the-meters, and their heat somehow compliments the overall cool vibe of the film... Jennifer Lopez has never been better, portraying a sexy-but-tough woman with just enough hints of vulnerability that she only allows one person to see.

.. Clooney plays Jack Foley as a laid-back con with more heart than brains... Ving Rhames and Catherine Keener were also great... I love the jazzy score by David Holmes (his first score), the look of the film is GREAT, and the script by Scott Frank is perfectly witty.

And of course, we have to mention the outstanding "sex scene" between Clooney and Lopez... I think that the REAL sex occurs as they're talking in the bar; the two them getting it on in the bedroom afterward just happens to be the icing on the cake.

Nicely done. My only complaint about the film is that there just HAD to have a menacing brother lusting after a white woman (Isaiah Washington going after Nancy Allen), which was wack... But that minor detail aside, this is one of the best romances I've ever seen, and it just so happens to have a nice crime story weaved into it.

.. Also, whoever came up with that horrible DVD cover design should be shot with that big-ass gun that covers a third of the front...
