Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Graham J — 17 Oct 2011
An excellent piece of style filmmaking that serves as an excellent precursor to Soderbergh's ultimate pop-art film Ocean's Eleven. But what really makes this film great is its devotion to its characters, and not just the leads.
Film romances don't get much better than Clooney and Lopez here, and both actors really make you believe the chemistry. But the great characters only begin there, with excellent actors like Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, Albert Brooks, and Steve Zahn just to name some all providing some great supporting performances.
However, toward the end when I thought the film was going to go the straight route of your standard crime movie about stealing diamonds, Foley makes a decision to re-enter the house based purely out of concern for someone's life, and you realize that Soderbergh is more concerned here with doing something different with the genre rather than just your regular shootout where the antihero dies in a blaze of glory.
Soderbergh has always been a master of combining popular genre-fare with indie film sensibilities, and this is no different.
