Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Marc R — 08 Jun 2013
This is an all-time favorite of mine. I think the acting, direction, and story are all pretty well done throughout. It gives you a lot of characterization via the story, rather than through complex (and time consuming) flashbacks or histories... you learn what you need as you go. This is not to say there aren't flashbacks; those that are provided round out the characters and fill in everyone's motivations for the current story.
This is also a case of the movie being better than the book. In the book, all the "good" or "sympathetic" characters are Caucasian and all of the "bad" characters are either Hispanic or Black. In the movie, they change some of the races so that it is more multiracial and it works.
In the end, the movie winds up being a lot more about this slice of life between a bank robber and a federal marshal than it is about the heist.
