Review of Our Man in Havana (1960) by Domenico L — 19 Feb 2009
Obi-wan Kenobi invents a drinking game with a checkers board and miniature bottles of bourbon and scotch and you're not going to watch? Worth your time just to see Alec Guinness play a drinky vacuum cleaner salesman in pre-revolutionary Cuba (but was actually shot in Cuba post revolution) with a flair for sci-fi illustrations.
But you also get the great scene where Noel Coward invites Guinness in to the toilet for a private conversation (talk about multi-layered). But wait, there's more! Lay your eyes on a slightly sinister Burl Ives - who apparently got most of his wardrobe at an Orson Welles 'Touch of Evil' rummage sale.
And don't forget Ernie Kovacs almost stealing the show as the cradle robbing Cuban Captain. Yeah, it's ultimately uneven and certainly no 'Third Man', but take it lightly and you'll have a decent time.
