Review of Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) by Jon C — 21 Oct 2016
A genuinely scary movie that totally makes you forget that last failed installment involving this evil board game.
Director Mike Flanagan wisely makes this a period piece taking place in the 1960's with a broken family struggling to make ends meet by scamming people into communicating with the deceased.
The filmmakers also cleverly use old filmmaking tactics like a vintage movie logo and dust spots to make the picture authentic.
Despite there being a ton of exposition in the plot there are some pretty well-timed scares.
The mother by Elizabeth Reaser is wonderful, the oldest daughter, Lina wants to grow up from the supernatural profession, but the true terror is with Lulu Wilson as Doris; she comes off as frightening coming into the Ouija board's possession of her.
This family's chemistry is spot-on and the way the house is filmed feels very confining like the evil doesn't want you to leave.
The first film was something of a misfire but this one gets back to the horror feel.
