Review of Osama (2004) by Hugh J — 23 Dec 2006
Wow. Osama is not exactly the feel-good movie of the year. Pretty depressing, so if you don't like that kind of movie, I advise you to steer clear from this. Otherwise, it is a must-see.
.
Osama is a depressing tale about a young girl who is very poor. This is a problem to her whole family, and that is because they are woman. In Afganistan, in case you don't know, woman cannot have a job, only men can. And all the men in this family died. So this is a pretty big problem. The family decides to make their 6-year old daughter look like a 6-year old boy, so that she can get a job and get food for the whole family. Of course, everyone's suspicous, so she has to be extremely careful.
.
Osama is a pretty depressing movie. Everyone in the girls family is so hungry and sick, and the girl is pressured and made fun of. She lives a hard life, and this film makes you feel the same way. You can't help but feel bad for pretty much every main character, and about the fact that there is no freedom, justice, or fairness in this poor village.
.
This movie is frightenly real, with perfect performances and a well-told plot. But it could've had some more happening along with a more satisfying ending. 8/10 :fresh:
.
