Review of Osama (2004) by Benjamin Y — 05 Oct 2009
Osama tells the story of a young girl in Afghanistan after the Taliban take over and institute their oppressive regime against women. If there is any question whether Afghani women are suffering under Taliban rule, this film poignantly addresses the plight of a widowed female doctor who dresses her daughter up as a boy so the two can work and bring home more money to their starving home.
We feel the daughter's terror and desperation to blend in as boy in a fundamentalist madrasah. Shot in vivid colors with lyrical compositions only underscores the poverty and destitution of this decimated population.
