Review of Orpheus (2013) by Elena . — 14 Jan 2007
Somebody once said that a good director makes love to his audience, while other directors seem to be masturbating. That appears to be the case here. I despise pointless art films as much as I despise Hollywood's worst excesses of commercial rubbish.
This whole film is all style and absolutely no substance. There is nothing in this film that anybody can relate to, not a decent performance by any of the actors and dialogue which is neither intelligent nor poetic but simply bland and trivial.
When will so-called arthouse directors realise that cinema is not the medium for this kind of thing? This is television or theatre, not film. Furthermore, it should be said once and for all that, while no film maker should be a slave to popularity, a film's popular success should not be ignored in it's judgement.
A film which fails in that area has failed significantly, as Orphee has.
