Review of Orpheus (2013) by Adrian B — 08 Apr 2011
Before the The French New Wave of exciting films, Jean Cocteau's released this visual gem of poetry and death. A local celebrity (Jean Marais) is involved in a brawl at a cafe, that results in a poet's death, who is the rival of the celebrity.
A princess (Maria Ceseres), who happened to stage the brawl and herself is "death," takes the body of the poet and asks the celebrity to accompany her. He begins to realize the true identity of this bizarre woman.
Like "Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bette)" and perhaps even better, Jean Cocteau has created a movie that integrates story, visuals and special effects into one. It is indeed a lovely film to watch and is well acted by the cast.
There are tragedies, symbolism, and memorable sequences that cannot easily forgotten is this film. In addition, the film as a whole may have been inspired the great fantasy film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger called "A Matter of Life and Death.
" Another magical film by Cocteau.
