Review of Orphan (2009) by Geoffrey T — 11 Apr 2012
And the award for most fucked up movie of the year goes to....you guessed it. If you have problems watching children engage in activities that no one should do, stay far, far away from this movie. However, I respect the fearlessness of it.
I don't think this movie is out to shock you too much(except the opening scene and one scene involving a hammer). I just think it naturally comes with telling this kind of story. But it's effective.
It's deeply unnerving to watch, and very uncomfortable. It's able to take aspects of horror movies that seem appallingly ordinary and make them work in context. And even if the film isn't really frightening at any moment, it's a different kind of horror, and the bottomline is that it achieves what it sets out to do.
