Review of Orphan (2009) by Steven M — 14 Jul 2012
A rather frustrating watch; this film has some cool ideas, but they aren't handled very well. The "twists" aren't planned too well, the characters all seem to be painfully stupid and oblivious and on top of that, our antagonist is extremely inconsistent.
She seems intimidating sometimes, but then she may overlook what she does with her evidence. Example: when she's lighting the treehouse on fire, she didn't bother to check to see if there was anyone in the house? As if a roaring fire 20 feet in the air isn't conspicuous enough.
But worst of all, the twist at the end seems to soften the potential psychological blow of what it is that our main character does to other people. It seems disturbing with some of it's sleazier moments, but then unveils a certain secret about our antagonist that makes it seem "not so bad.
" It takes a few risks and then pulls back. Really disappointing.
