Review of Orphan (2009) by Angela H — 23 Jan 2014

Original storyline. Has a nice surprise for the ending. Good movie for a horror/thriller. Vera Farmiga had a stillbirth. She also have alcohol addiction. Her young daughter Aryana Engineer is mute/deaf.

Peter Sarsgaard is the husband. They have another elder son Jimmy Bennett. They decide to adopt another child. Peter saw Isabelle Fuhrman painting very well and she's very sensible. CCH Pounder is the sister at the orphanage.

She say Isabelle is from Russia and her American adopted family died in a house fire. They decide to adopt her. She fits in well with Aryana but Jimmy is abit jealous. Isabelle wear very nicely and different to school.

One of the classmate make joke of her dress. Vera forbids the girls playing near the pond. Jimmy is shooting paintball at a pigeon and it is injured. Isabelle tells him to kill it but he don't dare so she use the brick and kill it.

Vera was keeping her clothes and she found a bible with a picture of a man. She was bullied in school by that same girl. Vera tells her about the stillborn daughter and her ash is in the greenhouse. Peter and Vera are having sex in the kitchen and Isabelle saw.

Vera try to explain to her what in love couples do and she say "they fuck". The girl bully is playing at the playground and Isabelle push her down and her ankle broke. Aryana saw her do it. When question by the parents, Aryana say she slipped.

Jimmy don't like Isabelle and say his friends make fun of him because of her and he don't acknowledge her as sister. Peter lock his tree house as punishment. CCH called to ask for Isabelle medical and dental report.

Vera saw her play piano very well and she reply she never said she don't know how to play and it must be frustrating her son isn't interested and her daughter is deaf to learn piano. Vera is not happy Peter didn't tell her about the sultry neighbor who ask for help.

CCH came by and tell them maybe Isabelle is causing all the troubles since previously a few mishaps happened when she's around. Her last adopted family house is arson and the culprit isn't caught yet.

Isabelle tell Aryana CCH is going to get her away and need her help to frighten her. She push Aryana and CCH nearly hit her. Isabelle kill her with a hammer from the back. She hide all evidence and hammer inside the tree house.

Jimmy saw them climb down from the tree house. At night she threaten him with a cutter if he say it out, she will cut off her dick before he even know what it is use for. After the session with the psychologist, the doctor say maybe it is Vera feeling some inadequacy to lead the tension.

Dead body of CCH is found. Isabelle painting have hidden UV paint on, depicting different picture. Peter is still skeptical to the theory of Vera. She call the Russian side and they have no record of Isabelle.

Peter want Isabelle to do something nice for Vera. She pluck out the flowers that's grown with the stillborn ash and she's very upset. Isabelle purposely clamp her own arm till it fracture and Vera is blame for it.

Vera buy wine and nearly drink it but resisted. When Vera left the car, Isabelle release the gear and brake. Luckily Aryana isn't hurt. She cover up for Isabelle and Peter think her alcohol addiction is back.

Isabelle threaten to shoot Vera if Aryana tells. Jimmy ask Aryana everything. Isabelle taunt Vera after reading her diary. She find her bible and found many pictures of man and contacted the institute that issue the bible.

It's not orphanage but mental institute. Jimmy go to his tree house and find out the dirty deeds. Isabelle set fire on it and lock him in. He climb out and fell. Isabelle is gonna kill him with a rock and Aryana push her off.

He's badly hurt and in hospital. Isabelle suffocate him while pretending to buy a soda. Vera slap her and hysterical and hospitalize. Jimmy manage to gain back pulse. Isabelle kiss Aryana goodnight and took her hearing aid.

Isabelle wear sexy clothes and try to seduce Peter. He ask her to go back her room. The doctor at the institute call Vera and say Isabelle isn't a child but a grown woman 33 years old, who suffer from a rare disorder that make her look child like.

She's violent and try to get out of her straitjacket many times, leaving scars on her neck and wrist (hence she always cover up with ribbon and choker). Passing off as little girl to be adopted, when she can't seduce a father, she kill the whole family.

Peter go to her bedroom and the UV light reveal many disturbing pictures. Isabelle kill Peter. Aryana saw and go hide. Isabelle grab the from his safe. She chase Aryana to the greenhouse and Vera crash the glass top onto her.

The police arrived. She sneak attack them and fall onto the frozen pond. Aryana shoot the pond and the ice break, both fall into the water. Vera give her a kick to the face and she fell into the water.
