Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Paul Z — 31 Jan 2009
Any film that removes the pixie grin off Americas sweetheart, Mary Tyler Moore's face and turns her into a cold, brittle ice queen should be of note. Its true to say she gives a performance of amazing understaement that is just as palpable and as telling as any all out histrionic performance.
The film is somewhat obvious in its emotional manipulation, but the acting in this, including a remarkable Timothy Hutton, raises the bar and makes it genuinely heartfelt.
