Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Jerrod G — 18 Nov 2009
Timothy Hutton gives an amazing performance in his portrayal of a teenage suicide-survivor dealing with the death of his older brother. Not only does this movie do a great job of representing the emotional turmoil of both teenage-hood and experiencing a crisis, it also shows the possibility of this happening among ordinary people, even your upper-middle-class suburbia family.
As much as I enjoyed it, the only thing I could stand was about the last 5 minutes. After Conrad's conflict finds resolution, I wanted the film to end; however, we are then thrown into a problem between the mom and dad. While this might be realistic, I didn't need it in this film. This forced the movie to become super-saturated with drama ---- just a bit too much for my taste.
Regardless, I can easily understand why this film took home the Best Picture Academy Award. Definitely one worth checking out.
