Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Bob V — 03 Dec 2010
A powerhouse of good acting, with Mary Tyler Moore, until this movie (and ever since, come to think of it) mostly known as a television sweetheart, cast as a distant unsympathetic mother, Donald Sutherland shedding his tough guy image & Timothy Hutton in his dà (C)but, becoming the youngest Best Supporting Oscar winner right away.
Redford in his directing dà (C)but never allows the movie to wander away in schmaltzy sentimentality, a feat lesser directors could never have managed considering the subject matter. He lets raw emotion streak across the screen in just the right doses, tempering it with the characters' detachment and inability to connect.
