Honestly I really only wanted to see Ordinary People because I had been watching The Mary Tyler Moore show and wanted to see Mary Tyler Moore. I'm glad that I did watch Ordinary People though because it took me on an emotional rollercoaster that I wasn't likely soon to forget.
Ordinary people benefits by such a great cast and brilliant direction. Special mentions to Timothy Hutton and Mary Tyler Moore. Timothy Hutton deserved his Academy Award for this and despite not winning an Academy Award, Mary Tyler Moore is the star of the show.
She shows that despite playing light hearted characters on television, she can give a dramatic performance. I will say some people may watch this movie and be waiting for something to happen, but the death of the son has already occurred so we're left with purely the aftermath.
It's a bold step but one that works well. Ordinary People is far from Ordinary and one of the best movies from the 1980's. Simply put, a classic.
