Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Emely A — 06 Dec 2011
This is an outstanding film. It is about a family falling apart after the death of the older son. No, it didn't deserve the Oscar over Ranging Bull, but you can't simply take away the praise.
The performances are wonderful. Timothy Hutton really got to me. And the always underrated Donald Sutherland giver a great performance. So does Mary Tyler Moore.
This is a very sad tale about moving on. There are scenes that are just heartbreaking and touching. The interaction between Moore Sutherland and Hutton is the core of this film. The way Calvin (Sutherland) tries to leverage the tension between his wife and his son plays out lovely.
Conrad (Hutton) just needs his mother to accept him with his flaws and to accept the fact that the son she lost was her favorite and she is now stuck with him.
I don't know why I enjoyed this movie so much, but I highly recommend it.
