A forlorn stillness embodies Robert Redford's masterpiece of a family's inability to communicate with each other after a death and attempted suicide. The entire cast shines, most notably, Mary Tyler Moore, whose emotionally unattached portrayal of the mother lingers within ones mind long after the film is finished.

Not enough is given to the screenplay, a masterpiece of subtle nuances and a characterizations- it ranks as one of the best of the 80's. A worthy choice for best picture of 1980, Ordinary people is one of the greatest family dramas mainstream Hollywood has ever produced.
