Review of Oranges and Sunshine (2010) by Teejay P — 07 Jan 2013
What makes Oranges and Sunshine a good movie is that is exposes the cruel forced transportation of 130,000 children from the ages of 5-12 eight thousand miles from parents who were told that they had been adopted to good families and the children were told their parents were dead, when neither was true.
The children were used as forced labor and both physically and sexually abused. What makes this a horror story is that these children came not from Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, but Great Britain, the first country to pass child labor laws in the 19th century.
What makes Oranges and Sunshine a great film is the restrained, dignified telling of the story without the melodrama and pathos into which it could have so easily degenerated. For this minor miracle, we have to thank an excellent director and cast and a great script.
And all of us who have seen this movie do so thank you.
