Review of Opposite Field (2014) by Charles S — 03 Jul 2017
I was expecting to see a team led to greatness, but that is not quite what this movie is. You get quick backstories for some of the players and the coach, but it feels like a lot is left out of this teams rise when you see them practicing in flip flops and sewn together cleats to having full uniforms when they go to the tournaments.
Then the way the games are cut with 1 to 3 score updates per game also makes it impossible to tell what happened. If you want a feel good movie about an underdog succeeding you might like this, but the way it is framed and paced you just see a team that was already great show up places play and leave with little time spent of the details other than the coaches speeches.
The teams set backs and their ultimate success getting to the world championship fly by so that you cannot tell how they recovered or ended up performing through those hardships.
