Review of Opera (1987) by Tim W — 20 Apr 2010
In my small world, with only my brain to reign as king, Dario Argento is the greatest horror director ever. That being said, he has had a few clunckers. There seemed to be a string of them in the late eighties but the maestro redeemed himself with this classic, Opera.
Loosely based on the Phantom of the Opera ( which Argento would later remake into maybe his worst film), the story revolves around a young opera singer who replaces the lead female in Macbeth. The problem is that the young girl does not want to make her debut in this opera.
She believes that the play is cursed and very soon things begin to appear so. The lady gets her first "fan" which is a psycho-pathic murderer. The killer breaks into different places where the girl stays, resulting in her being tied up, and forced to watch brutal murders by needles attached to her bottom eye lids.
Dario Argento has many trademarks he is known for and this film seems to have them all. The camera work is brilliant. The shots Argento gets never cease to amaze me. The murders scene, which are the highlight of his films, are brutal and inventive.
The story line is well paced and has very suspenseful moments. This film is a must have for Argento and horror fans alike. I believe Opera is one of the top 3 best Argento films of all time..
