Review of Open Water 2: Adrift (2006) by Corneliu R — 20 Jul 2009
Open Water 2: Adrift takes the depressing concept of the original, does a couple of things better, then makes a boatload of things worse. The original was a "realistic" but nihilistic story of a couple left behind to die in the middle of the ocean.
Open Water 2 changes the scenario to a group of rich, unlikable assholes who, because they're careless and stupid, screw themselves over while deep sea snorkeling so they can't get back aboard their luxurious yacht.
The presence of the yacht - salvation being *right there* next to them yet they can't get back on board - is dramatically interesting. Too bad the characters are such pig headed morons that by their own stupid behavior, they continually sabotage their own survival.
One idiot has a knife that he drops like a dimwit. Another has a cellphone and receives a call, but he panics like a jackass when the reception is bad and hurls the phone into the drink. The idiot who dropped the knife then conks himself on the head and gives himself a fatal head wound.
They actually come up with a clever plan to remove their swimwear, create a makeshift rope and climb up the boat. Instead of sending the lightest person to climb, they send one of the buff dudes. Of course, the rope snaps.
By this point, the hell with all of these fuckers, let them die. Raising the stakes in manipulative plotting is the sleeping baby on the boat. Will she wake up and cry if she doesn't get her milk? Oh no! The ending is an improvement over the first Open Water, but not an improvement is when they're all skinny dipping and somehow the underwater photography is exclusively of the dudes.
Where are the sharks to bite them in their asses when you need them?
