Costner does a good job both directing and acting. Having had to do the whole thing mostly by himself to get it made it is suprisingly quite good quality. Duvall plays an intriguing character and Gambon plays the classic western villian quite well.
Cinematography is very good and the film is one of the best modern westerns.
