Review of Open Range (2003) by Catherine K — 11 Nov 2009
Capsule review from when I first saw it in theaters:
Another one of Kevin Costner's triple-threat movies as director, producer and star. And while it was a lot better than Waterworld, it still wasn't on the same level as Dances With Wolves. Costner co-stars with the legendary Robert Duvall in this Western about a group of "freegrazers" dealing with changing times. Their fellow "grazers" are portrayed by Diego Luna (Y Tu Mama Tambien) and Abraham Benrubi (TV's ER). Oscar-winner Annette Bening plays Costner's love interest, Michael Gambon is miscast as the Irish settler out to stop them, and Michael Jeter plays a townsman who is willing to help the travelers. This movie, amazingly, was not overbearingly cheesy, even though Duvall really did say "that sticks in my craw" at one point. Some of the one-liners Costner and Duvall had were hilarious, they're what kept the slow-paced movie going.
