Review of Open Range (2003) by Tony P — 21 Oct 2009
A superb western. The rising action is perfectly arranged to a glorious, damning climax that is permenantly riveting. It's almost an exercise in immaculate pacing, toiling in exposition with hearty dialogue, pointilated by droplets of danger that boil into a whole.
Duvall and Costner deliver some fine performances, their partnership sometimes a duel of machismo and other times a collaborative ingenuity. Michael Jeter, Michael Gambon, and Diego Luna also turn in remarkable work.
The big gunfight is superbly orchestrated, but unfortunately watered down by a cheesily romantic denoument. A killer film, nonetheless.
