Review of Open City (2008) by Slappy M — 27 Jan 2010
Rossellini conceived of this resistance drama while Rome was still in the final days of the Nazi occupation, filmed it in the immediate wake of the liberation with whatever raw stock he could accumulate, and presented the people and the city as a crushed but unbreakable spiritual force.
In the making his film came to define the most important pre-New Wave film movement, and today it's just as powerful as it ever was.
