Review of Only the Lonely (1991) by Miriam G — 22 May 2011
Candyâ(TM)s effortless comedic turn boosts this Columbus/Hughes film from being ordinary to the sweet and sentimental romantic comedy I remember. The concept of an overprotective, needy mother holding back her grown son from career aspirations and relationships is nothing new (i.
E., Marty, Monster-in-Law). Candy and Sheedy have some good chemistry and my favorite scene is when he lists off all of the possible reasons she would reject his first date proposal. (Although, I'm also partial to the actual first date at olâ(TM) Comiskey â" classy!) It was nice to see the veteran Oâ(TM)Hara play the crusty mother, but she seemed out of place throughout the film.
