Review of Only the Brave (2017) by Devaughn B — 20 Oct 2017
For months the trailers really didn't have me sold. I honestly thought this film looked like a NatGeo or History Channel original. I'm glad to say I don't think I've ever been more wrong. I saw this yesterday and really had to sleep on my thoughts because I looked back hard for something negative to say. But there really isn't anything bad to say here!
The true story of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots, a team of Arizona firefighters, 19 of whom died battling a 2013 fire (the second worst loss of American firefighters' lives, after September 11, which I didn't know). This is easily one of the best films I've seen all year, and the third act had me damn near sobbing, as much of the auditorium was.
This film reminded me so much of Saving Private Ryan, from the comradery, character development, and viciousness and legitimate feel of terror from the actors. Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jeff Bridges give some of the best performances of their careers, in my opinion. I truly found nothing wrong with this film and it's something I want to see again and again!
