Review of Only the Brave (2017) by Geri S — 24 Oct 2017
It seems to me that it is getting harder and harder to put out a 'true story' movie these days. What do you leave in, and what do you leave out? Only the Brave does a good job with the 'based on actual events' situation in the story about the Yarnill fire.
As I sat there I said to myself a number of times, no way I would do what these guys do. This is where the movie really succeeds, in making you feel for these guys. I didn't know the outcome of the true story of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots before the film, and I won't reveal it here as it gives the movie even more depth to not know.
My major complaint with the film is to be able to hear dialogue. There's a bunch of times that you can't make out what is being said between the firefighters, and that really started to bug me.
The film is about 15 minutes too long, but that is a minor complaint. This one is certainly worth a matinee and maybe even full price.
