Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Anthony F — 21 May 2014
The reuniting of director Nicolas Winding Refn with star Ryan Gosling from 2011's masterpiece "Drive" proves to be ill-fated in this sadistically ultra-violent disaster of a film. The near incomprehensible story follows that of a Thai boxing ring owner (Gosling) out to avenge the murder of his older brother (who himself was a murderous pedophile) under the guidance of their nightmarishly controlling mother.
What begins as a vain attempt to fuze the filmmaking styles of Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch ultimately gets lost in a murky haze of style-over-substance. Gosling and Refn, great talents both, should be ashamed of themselves.
Truly one of the worst films I've ever seen.
