Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Tuukka P — 13 Jan 2015
Refn and Gosling reteam after superb Drive in a story about a criminal living in Thailand who has to decide whether to exact revenge on his brothers killer. Visually Refn has again created hellish vision of Bangkok with strong colors and deep shadows.
Gosling is again the strong silent type with minimal dialogue and twisted psyche. As a whole this is clearly more like Refns previous movies before Drive (like Valhalla Rising) with its strong art house feel and very disturbing violent scenes followed by characters doing something very odd - like singing karaoke.
Not for everybody but if you know what you're in for this is quite an experience.
