Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Shaun B — 17 Dec 2015
I keep giving Refn chance after chance to prove that he's more than a mere imitation of those he's influenced by (think Kubrick/Lynch/Cronenberg) but while the visual style and flow is often very good, there always seems to be something missing.
In the end you can't shake off the feeling that this is second rate homage to those directors that have influenced true cinema for the modern age. I am thankful that there are directors like Refn that are trying to find a balance between art and mainstream but we need more boundaries pushed for others to become more interested or else they'll lose interest in such glacial storytelling and sometimes confusing storyline.
