Review of Only Angels Have Wings (1939) by Don B — 25 Mar 2008
A splendid movie... tense and genuinely well photographed. Aside from the opening dock side scene and the arial photography, it is virtually shot on only one location! Jean Arthur is the soul of the movie, and Cary Grant is the focus of everyones attention. It is, however.
Rita Hayworth who brightens the black and white screen the most, in her small role as Grants ex-lover... a woman who just couldn't bare Grant's constant death-defying air journeys. Flying, although mentioned as being indescribably, is not glamourised at all. These pilots don't fly for glory and honour... but rather for money and survival. This is their job, and they must do it... regardless of whether the mountain pass is clear or not.
A film which isn't half as famous as it should be. And certainly one of Crary Grant's most interestingly different characters.
