Molly, it is based on the Old Testament book of Ester. After watching this movie I read that book. It was fun how the movie filled in between the lines of the book. Many Old Testament books can be dry statements of facts, however, using the relationships built in the movie made the text jump out with life.
The director stayed very close to the book. I loved this movie.
