Review of One Missed Call (2003) by Joseph S — 22 Jul 2007
I was initially disappointed by this movie somewhat lacking in gore, but considering the suspense factor, it proved to be very unsettling throughout. I just had to stick around for the ending. There's something about good old-fashioned make-up effects that puts a scarier edge more than any SFX rendering can.
The movie focuses on a curse which is triggered when a college girl answers her cellphone, and the sound she hears is her own voice, with screams ending in death. She must figure out a way to break the curse before it kills any more people.
While a lot like "Ringu" and "Ju-On" in some aspects, Miike Takashi puts in his own flair that has earned many of his movies the dubious distinction of being extremely disturbing and controversial bordering on taboo. Sure to be a classic. Get it if you can, and watch for the American adaptation soon!
