Review of One Missed Call (2003) by Dan B — 18 Jun 2008
Derivative, but nonetheless effective Ring / Grudge variant. Director Takashi Miike eschews the mind blowing excesses of Audition and Dead or Alive and conforms to genre convention by including a vengeful female spirit with long black hair and a denouement that descends into incomprehensibility.
(Call me old fashioned, but I quite like having a clue what's going on.) Still, for the most part it's an atmospheric and at times genuinely creepy slice of technohorror, which feels as if there's always something dreadful lurking just at the edge of the frame.
Outstays it's welcome by about 20 mins, but the first 90 or so are cracking.
