Review of One Hour Photo (2002) by Michael S — 24 Apr 2013
Plot: Take a famous Hollywood comedian and put him in a role as a very tame psycho. It's an interesting idea to say the least. This movie had me tensely watching in anticipation of what might happen next, and to it's credit, it has some pretty solid build up. However, the pay off falls flat and leaves the whole movie as just a 90 minute film of cringing at how creepy Robin Williams can be.
Acting/Script: The regular people act regular enough, and the child actor sucks at portraying how a 10-something year old might act. Not much stands out from the supporting cast. Robin Williams does a pretty good job of acting generally creepy and odd, to the point of the audience actually feeling pretty uncomfortable at times. I believe this was intended, so kudos to Robin Williams.
Soundtrack/SFX: Absolutely nothing about the soundtrack from this movie stood out to me. It has sound, and it didn't bother me, so I guess it gets a pass.
Visuals: The movie is pretty bland, I'm not entirely sure if that's the specific style it was going for or if the set designers didn't really have any solid ideas, but nothing stood out to me. It didn't have anything extremely creepy, or beautiful, or anything. It just looked very ordinary.
Overall: It was alright, it held my attention for its entire run time, but didn't really blow me away in any way other than making me cringe at how weird and creepy Robin Williams character is. The ending was alright, but didn't really live up to all the movie's build up. 3/5.
