Review of One Hour Photo (2002) by Kyle L — 13 Aug 2014
One Hour Photo is one of the best psychological thrillers in recent years and it is also Robin Williams' best films to date. The story of this film is about an employee name Seymour "Sy" Parish who is an employee at the One Hour Photo lab and is leading a lonely and depressing life where his only peacefulness is the appearance of his favorite customers the Yorkins family.
But soon When Sy takes his obsession with the Yorkins too far things go for a dark turn to him and the family as well when Sy discovered that Will Yorkin is cheating on his wife. I have to say I love this psycho thriller and it seriously creeped me out from the beginning until the end and I totally enjoy it when I saw it the first time and hopefully I'll be watching it again in one of these days.
I'm making a review of this film for Robin Williams and this review is dedicated to him so I'm gonna make a very good review of this film. I use to remember also that when I was a grade 3 student I saw a VCD copy of this film in my local video store and when I looked at it I was completely full of mystery on what the film is about until when I saw the trailer and watched it last night I was surprised and amazed as well I didn't know Robin Williams has pure talent in these kinds of films other than his usual comedy genre.
What's impressive about One Hour Photo is that the film is superb and well paced from the beginning until the end and I so adore the pacing of this film a lot because the beginning of this film is quiet and slow until in the later on half of the film the movie itself gets creepier and creepier until the end and I'm so full of surprises when I really watched this film last night.
The other good things about this film is that the movie itself has loads of fantastic colors and nice close ups in several scenes like the photo machine sequence when the photos are getting processed and developed and a couple of outstanding settings like the hotel and Sy's hollow apartment that's full of pictures of the Yorkins family.
The second highlight of the film is that the film itself has loads of amazing themes and tones that deals with loneliness, family, issues and obsession and they are all executed methodically in a very dark way that I've never seen before plus the film itself has loads of scenes that are way too creepy and chilling plus tense for me to handle(Scenes where Sy stalks the family, The scene where Sy enters the house and the hotel climax and finale)and the other scene that scared my pants off is Sy's nightmare which is by far one of the most terrifying scenes in the film and one of the scariest moments in the history of cinema.
But the true main highlight of the film is Robin Williams himself. This actor seriously gave me big surprises with his performance in the film and in my opinion this is his best performance to date since Jumanji and Happy Feet.
Seriously he is so creepy in this film and he really looks and acts like a stalker throughout the entire film his performance just creeped me out and send a shiver and chills in my spine and I love how his performance goes from a quiet and lonely man to a creepy stalker in the later on half of the film its even creepy to picture him being part of the family as Uncle Sy when I saw the ending of this movie especially when he's obsessed with the family.
While Robin Williams deliver an outstanding performance in the film the rest of the casts did the same thing as well and all of them delivered solid and amazing performances throughout the whole film.
Music video and rookie director Mark Romanek did a very good job with his work in the film and his directing is full of spectacular vision and flawless moments that you will never forget and I love how he perfectly handle this film a lot he went from becoming a rookie music video director to an expert film director and I would like to see him make more Thrillers or other films in the future and I'm so looking forward to it.
Overall One Hour Photo is an outstanding and well achieved yet effective creepy stalker psychological thriller that will keep audiences glued to the seat until the end and this is for those who are interested in watching lots of psychological thrillers either in the 90's or this year.
This movie gets an 11/10. R.I.P(Rest In Peace)Robin Williams you are one of the most gifted actors in the history of cinema and one of the most memorable actors we will never forget we will dearly miss you Mr.
Williams.
