Review of Ondine (2010) by Miguel S — 26 Oct 2010
I'm a big fan of Neil Jordan's work so I'm probably biased, but I really loved this melancholy and romantic tale of an alcoholic Irish fisherman who discovers a woman in his fishing net and believes that she might be a Selkie (not a mermaid).
Colin Farrell (Syracuse) gave an excellent performance in this film, as did his co-stars Alicja Bachleda (Ondine - with whom he had a child) and Alison Barry (Annie). Neil Jordan IS a master when it comes to describing the emotional depth of the human psyche and few people can depict Ireland on film the way Jordan can.
Once again he put his friend Stephen Rea in his film, in a quiet and subtly humorous role as Syracuse's confessor, the local priest. The soundtrack features a song by Sigur Ros that is truly haunting and the film's tagline: "The truth is not what you know.
It's what you believe." is perfect.
