Review of Ondine (2010) by Aidan H — 30 Oct 2010
After watching this execrable slice of Irish whimsy, I can only surmise that the inhabitants of the tiny fishing village it features are the same retarded bunch that didn't guess the gender of the singer in The Crying Game.
Performance-wise, is-she-or-isn't she mermaid Bachleda is as unconvincing as her accent while Barry is consummately annoying as Farrell's wheelchair-bound daughter. Director/writer Jordan pushes the fairy tale aspect to the max before capitulating to a mediocre 'twist' that does little to make its audience care much either way in the end.
Some lovely cinemaphotography of the Emerald Isle notwithstanding, this is a trite and unsatisfying way to spend almost 2 hours. Ignore.
