Review of Ondine (2010) by Ian P — 14 Dec 2010
I was only able to understand the Irish brogue dialog by using Spanish subtitles, and the only Spanish, that I know is from words I learned on a "tear off sheets" Spanish word calendar. Surprisingly, the DVD did not have English subtitles as a selection. The spoken language was soft and hard to make out in places. Makes me think my hearing is going.
The land and scenery were wonderful, as fishing boats on an ocean is something I have never seen very much, if ever.
The story is pretty entertaining until the accident, drunken binge, and fight near the end of the movie, which I fast forwarded through and did not watch. I preferred to enjoy the fantasy, the love story, and the characters which are charming. The part where it's more of a thriller, was not of much interest. Except that it did explain why the woman ended up in the fisherman's net.
The confession sessions with the priest were sort of sweetly entertaining. I think this movie is best seen on the big screen, instead of a little television. The love affair of the couple and the intrusion of the preteen girl with her speculations about the woman's life in the ocean, was charming.
